now that we have all just experienced fireworks last night in our respective locations worldwide, i am reminded of the annual summer fireworks competition event held on the last saturday of july on the sumida river in tokyo. it is a tradition that dates back to the edo period, and is a very popular event today. with a million people attending each year, get there early, secure a spot with friends, and plan a day around this exciting event. bring an adequate supply of onigiri and beer…and, as it is july in tokyo, a paper fan. wear your festive happi coat or your kimono - this is one of the best summer events in tokyo, and a well organized one - i enjoyed my day when i attended with my work colleagues. i will concede however that the setting may not be as spectacular as the sydney bridge, or hong kong harbor, but unlike other fireworks, people make a day long picnic and an excuse to socialize with friends. i highly recommend the event – the fireworks themselves are also quite spectacular.
